We hope you are all enjoying the summer and getting to spend some time outdoors now that the cicadas are (finally) gone! Here’s what your FLOC has been up to this summer…
Summer Program update
FLOC students have been rocking it this month in FLOC’s Virtual Summer Program. In addition to FLOC’s one-on-one tutoring in reading and math each week, some students signed on to join FLOC’s Book Club and Book Review Group. These students have spent the last couple of weeks reading books and discussing them with their peers and FLOC staff. Then, they turned their book reviews into a project, making websites or presentations. Some students even came up with their own stories to share! We are so proud of how creative FLOC students have been, and love seeing everything they have come up with this summer.
Meet FLOC's Summer Intern!
Austin became a FLOC intern because he wanted to work with DC students and “be an advocate for them during this challenging era we’re in.” In the few months, he’s been here, he’s learned that if you give students a platform to succeed and space to express themselves they will. When Austin graduates from Virginia Commonwealth University, he wants to continue focusing on education and working with youth in the community. We were so glad to have Austin with us this summer and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Upcoming Events
- August 30th
FLOC is partnering up with Chipotle to hold another Percent Night! What better way to celebrate the first day of school for DC students (and their parents) than by eating out for dinner? Order online, in person, or through the Chipotle app from their 8th Street location on Monday, Aug. 30th from 4-8 pm, and 50% of the proceeds will be donated back to FLOC.
