Leaders In Action 2013-2014

The Outdoor Education Center is gearing up for Leaders In Action 2013-2014! Last year’s program was extremely successful, with many field trips, guest speakers, outdoor activities, and even an alternative spring break trip to Charleston, WV! The OEC hosts Leaders In Action (LIA) at two local middle schools, Charles Town Middle School and Harpers Ferry Middle School where we meet weekly from 3:00pm-5:00pm.

OEC Summer Camp Memories

Summer camp just ended here at The Outdoor Education Center. This summer was full of laughing, camping, canoeing, hiking, zip lining, and much more!  At the end of each camp we encouraged the campers to write down some of their favorite camp moments from our Leadership, Wilderness Voyager, Arts on the Mountain, and Ridge to River Camps.

Arts on the Mountain Camp!

Just last week the Outdoor Education Center hosted twenty-one students for our first ever “Arts on the Mountain Camp!” To kick off the week, students tie-dyed shirts, donated by Skinner Law Firm, designed team flags inspired by Salvador Dali and Margaret Bourke-White, and created their own unique twig art.

Postsecondary Scholars Career Development Conference

June 13 marked the first of what is expected to be an annual conference offered to FLOC postsecondary students during the summer intercession.  The Saturday event gave students an opportunity to attend two workshops: one workshop, with Justin Kollinger, addressing topics revolving around graduate school, and another workshop, with Josh Christianson, on career preparedness.

Here are 5 quick tips on how you can help us get the word out about FLOC:

Recruit a friend to volunteer-People are much more likely to volunteer if they are recruited in a one-on-one conversation with a friend. Think of a few friends who you think might enjoy working at FLOC and share your experience with the organization. If everyone who currently tutors brought in just one friend we could serve more than 600 students!
