As anyone that works with students will tell you, it’s not always about what you teach them, but the things that they teach you. This spring, FLOC staff has been working hard enrolling and placing more students and tutors into our programs for the spring semester.
Each year around this time, FLOC partner College Summit organizes a Career Week, bringing professionals from the community into high school classrooms and after-school workshops to share their journeys through high school, college, and the world of work.
Middle school students in the Scholars Program have been investigating a wide range of professional fields and jobs, culminating in an exciting Career Cluster Fair. For two weeks, the Scholars worked in teams to create colorful and informative posters about the specific career clusters they were assigned.
Judith first heard about FLOC while she was at her work at a bank, and a customer asked to have her FLOC background check forms notarized. After talking with her for a while, Judith could notice her excitement to work with FLOC students.
Upon first interaction, Tewabech doesn’t strike you as a typical high school student. She’s reading George Orwell’s 1984 a second time for fun – this time outside of class to get more meaning out if it. If for some reason you needed ceramic carving tools, Tewabech could pull hers out of her backpack for you to borrow.
Ann Randolph, writer, performer, and educator, came to FLOC on Thursday, February 6th to teach a creative workshop for 12 of our high school Scholars. She facilitated large group and paired activities where students were able to use improvisation to explore emotions and conflict, as well to overcome their inner critic and transform ideas into performance.
Dabney N. Miller passed away at his home on February 5, 2014 at the age of 81. He was part of the core group who helped lay the foundation for FLOC. Mr. Miller taught science in public high schools for 15 years. Living within close proximity to Washington, DC, he became aware of the many challenges facing urban youth.
Ask an adult what they want to be when they grow up. Odds are, they’ll stumble through an answer. Ask Nenis, a sixth grader in the Tuesday Night Reading program, and you’ll hear here confidently say “Journalist.”
When I moved to Washington, DC in June 2012, I wanted to volunteer with an organization in the area where I could work one-on-one with someone to have a sense of consistency and to have a more tangible grasp on how my time was making a difference.
