In the beginning of a new year people often make resolutions. Many want to improve their lives as well as the life of others. Engaging in volunteer work is perhaps the best way to do this. Here are 14 reasons why volunteering at For Love of Children (FLOC) should be one of your resolutions for this new year.
Da’Maree is a very optimistic student in our Thursday Night Math program. When talking to her I could notice her kindness and her eagerness to learn. Since she started at FLOC this fall, she has shown a lot of improvement in her math skills and a lot of determination to continue progressing.
This year the Scholars program is implementing a new advising model to ensure that all students are prepared for middle school, high school, college and beyond. Students meet with an advisor four times a year and submit their transcript and quarterly grades to inform these conversations.
I love this time of year for many reasons – one of which is definitely NOT the frigid temperatures! I love it because of the time I get to spend with my loved ones, relaxing and recharging after what is most often a busy year that’s gone by too fast.
Jacob is brand new to the Leaders In Action (LIA) program this year. As a 6th grader at Charles Town Middle School, he became interested in the program when he learned that LIA focuses on “health, being active and outdoor activities.”
Our 7th Annual Book Festival took place at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery on Saturday November 16th. Over 130 people attended the event including FLOC students, volunteers, parents, and board members. This year we were able to celebrate our annual literacy event by distributing over 1,170 books to the 73 students who attended.
Each year, FLOC’s high school Scholars participate in the Scholars in the Workplace program. This project aims to provide our students with critical career exposure to help them identify possible areas of interest, meet successful professionals in a variety of career fields and give them the chance to experience different workplace environments.
As our 12th grade Scholars are finishing their last winter semester in high school, a team of dedicated coaches set out to make the college process less stressful for our students. During our Wednesday Night programming, Scholars are paired with a coach to walk through the challenging process of college applications and scholarships.
The Outdoor Education Center (OEC) welcomes our brand new AmeriCorps VISTA, Kate Nelson. Kate grew up on the South Side of Chicago and ventured here this past summer to work as a counselor/naturalist with our West Virginia and DC students.
For Jessica, being a tutor is nothing new, as she previously volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club of her hometown in Kentucky. While there, Jessica read to the kids using materials that she borrowed from her mom, who was a reading teacher and always instilled in her the importance of education.
