On Tuesday, April 30th, For Love of Chidlren (FLOC) hosted its annual Beyond the Classroom fundraising breakfast. With a room of over 180 supporters, FLOC was able to raise over $100,000 that will enable FLOC to better serve the students of DC. The program opened with the Board Chair, Colin Kimpel, introducing Brandelyn Anderson, FLOC’s Executive Director. Brandelyn then shared a moment with FLOC founder, Fred Taylor, when she presented him with the Lifetime of Service Award. This is the inaugural year for our Lifetime of Service Award, and we could not have thought of a better person to honor.
Fred shared the history of FLOC and how we were born from the Civil Rights movement. “If there is any movement that needs to be revved right now, it is the legacy of the vision of the Civil Rights movement,” Fred said. He described FLOC as an organization that helps rescue kids in quicksand and gets them onto solid ground. As we look to the future, we are so humbled to be rooted in such an important movement.
Students from our City Leaders Program (CLP) introduced a special video created just for the event. The documentary-style production was developed by those students as part of their CLPs cohort project. The documentary dives into the relationships between the students and their tutors, as well as sharing what FLOC means to them. The video highlighted student-tutor pairs with a history together to show just how important these relationships and FLOC’s programs are to the futures of our students.
