Sparking Success in 2014: A Look Back at a Wonderful Year
As we enter the last month of the year, let’s take a look back at all we’ve achieved together in 2014. Today, FLOC joins the DC Alliance of Youth Advocates in telling stories of our students’ successes. Some highlights of the year:
Meet Madeleine
Madeleine Fazio serves as a math tutor with the FLOC Neighborhood Tutoring Program. She tutors one student on Thursday nights at FLOC and another on Wednesday afternoons at Tyler Elementary.
9th Annual Book Festival
On Saturday, November 14th, the holiday season officially kicked off for FLOC students as they were able to take home as many free books as they could carry (with the help of parents and tote bags). FLOC held its 9th Annual Book Festival, which aims to further foster a love of reading by growing our students’ libraries.

Giving Tuesday is Next Week!
Thanksgiving is coming up, which is a day that brings family and friends together to eat, watch football, and relax. Many people also give back to the community in the form of community service as well as charitable donations this time of year.
Zine Making 101

Freedom’s Run & Volunteerism
Some of you may not know that not only does FLOC have youth afterschool programming in DC, but also in Jefferson County, WV, located just across the Virginia line at the southern tip of the eastern panhandle. FLOC’s Outdoor Education Center staff facilitate a variety of outdoor and team-building programs as well as host the DC and WV youth during their FLOC summer camps.
Meet Jessica, a Postsecondary Coach
Jessica Kaushal currently serves as a postsecondary coach in the Scholars program where she is matched with a twelfth grade scholar to provide support on his journey towards a postsecondary education.
