Summer at FLOC is about more than keeping students engaged while school is out. It is about creating opportunities for young people to discover their strengths, explore what is possible, and begin building the skills and confidence they will need for the future.
This summer, FLOC’s Pathways Forward: Teen Experience brought that mission to life. Forty teens participated in four weeks of hands-on career exploration, leadership development, and college and career preparation. In a safe and supportive environment, students strengthened critical thinking, teamwork, confidence, and practical skills that will serve them well in high school and beyond.
Turning Career Exploration into Experience
One of the most exciting parts of the summer was giving students opportunities to move beyond simply hearing about careers and experience them firsthand.
Throughout the program, students explored Health Science, STEAM, Business & Entrepreneurship, and Culinary Arts. Their experiences ranged from mock medical simulations and cybersecurity lessons to entrepreneurship projects, gardening, and culinary activities. Each opportunity helped students make connections between what they are learning today and the careers they may pursue tomorrow.
These experiences matter because young people cannot always imagine themselves in careers they have never had an opportunity to see or explore. By introducing students to different industries and professionals, FLOC is helping them expand their understanding of what their futures can look like.
Building Leaders Beyond the Classroom
Career exposure was only one part of the experience. Pathways Forward also focused on preparing students to successfully navigate high school and the transition into adulthood.
Participants developed a stronger understanding of GPA, graduation requirements, communication, self-awareness, professional presence, and high school success. These lessons were designed to help students make informed decisions now while preparing them for college, careers, and life after graduation.
Leadership development is especially important at this stage of a young person’s life. Learning how to communicate effectively, understand yourself, work with others, and present yourself professionally builds a foundation that students can carry into classrooms, college campuses, workplaces, and their communities.
Community Partners Bringing Possibilities to Life
FLOC knows that preparing tomorrow’s leaders is a community effort. This summer, our students benefited from meaningful partnerships with organizations and professionals who shared their expertise, experiences, and time.
Students engaged with DC Fire and EMS, Beyond The Game Youth Leadership, Inc., the DC Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking, Children’s National Hospital, and DC Central Kitchen. Through these partnerships, teens gained hands-on exposure to CPR, financial literacy, health education, leadership development, and the nonprofit food system.
These interactions gave students something especially valuable: the opportunity to connect what they were learning to people doing meaningful work in the real world. Community partnerships like these help make career possibilities tangible while showing young people that there is a network of adults and organizations invested in their success.
Four Weeks, Lasting Impact
The impact of the summer could be seen in the way students showed up each day—with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to try something new. Throughout the four weeks, participants asked thoughtful questions, developed innovative ideas, embraced new opportunities, and built meaningful relationships with their peers and community partners.
Those moments represent exactly what FLOC hopes to cultivate through Pathways Forward: young people who are curious about the world around them, confident in their abilities, willing to explore new possibilities, and increasingly prepared to shape their own futures.
As we look ahead to another school year, the lessons of this summer will continue with our students. The careers they explored may spark new ambitions. The leadership skills they practiced can strengthen how they show up at school and in their communities. And the relationships they formed can remind them that they have people cheering them on along the way.
At FLOC, preparing tomorrow’s leaders does not begin when students graduate. It begins today, with exposure, opportunity, encouragement, and the belief that every young person deserves the tools to build a bright future.
And this summer, 40 young people took another important step toward doing just that.
