College Signing Day is Coming to FLOC!

Have you heard about College Signing Day, an effort spearheaded by the First Lady’s office’s Reach Higher initiative to celebrate all young people’s college and career futures with as much pomp and circumstance as athlete college signing decisions?

It’s been going on for a few years now across the country, including right here in DC through DC Public Schools, and this year FLOC is planning a little celebration of our own.

On Monday, May 2nd, we’ll invite each of our 12th Grade Scholars (who have been working incredibly hard this year on applications, financial aid research, scholarship essays, tough decisions, and more… not to mention 12 years of hard work in school and extracurricular activities!) to announce their postsecondary plans for next fall. They’ll make it official in front of their peers, volunteer postsecondary coaches, and a few others in our FLOC community, then we’ll celebrate with some photos, a pizza party, and LOTS of applause.

Here are some of our 12th grade Scholars on a college tour last spring:

There are a few ways YOU, as a FLOC friend and supporter, can get involved:

Share messages of congratulations and support (and even selfies in college gear!) for our Scholars. You can comment on this blog post, tag us (and the #ReachHigher hashtag) in a post on Twitter or Instagram, write on our Facebook wall, or email something to emetz@floc.org. We’ll print out all notes of congratulations and celebration and share them at our celebration next week.

We’ll be observing an extended week of college awareness at FLOC as part of this celebration, so ALL staff and volunteers are encouraged to wear college gear to program the week of May 2nd – 7th.

For inspiration, take a look at some FLOC staff, volunteers, and Postsecondary Scholars decked out in college gear at December’s College Night event:

Thanks in advance for your help congratulating our seniors, and for all you do to support the critical work of celebrating our students’ successes and achievements every step of the way.
