FLOC Book Festival: A Great Success

Our 7th Annual Book Festival took place at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery on Saturday November 16th. Over 130 people attended the event including FLOC students, volunteers, parents, and board members. This year we were able to celebrate our annual literacy event by distributing over 1,170 books to the 73 students who attended.

Maintaining Your Cool

Today I had to prove that I knew about Drake and, in fact, I was ridiculously pleased to announce that I owned his first two albums. Last week I proudly shared that 2 Chainz would be performing back in my home country. The looks of awe on my student’s face was priceless. Score, big time. Major cool points. I’ve rarely been more grateful for friends who are DJs.

A Volunteer’s Perspective on Giving to FLOC

Since September, I’ve volunteered with FLOC Tuesday nights from 6-8pm tutoring a middle school student in reading and writing.  While the journey has not always been a smooth one as my student and I learned one another’s boundaries and I remembered what it was like to be in middle school again, overall, it has been an incredibly rewarding experience.
