On Thursday, October 17th, the DC Alliance of Youth Advocates (DCAYA) and the Afterschool Alliance hosted the 12th annual Lights On Afterschool, an event celebrated nationwide to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for America’s children. David, a 12th-grade Scholar, was asked to deliver remarks on his experiences in afterschool programs.
Today I had to prove that I knew about Drake and, in fact, I was ridiculously pleased to announce that I owned his first two albums. Last week I proudly shared that 2 Chainz would be performing back in my home country. The looks of awe on my student’s face was priceless. Score, big time. Major cool points. Fall has finally arrived. After what felt like an endless summer, a series of gray and rainy days have left us with cool nights and increasingly colorful trees. At FLOC, everything kicks into high gear in the fall.
Last week, the 7th-grade Scholars kicked off their exploration of community service by making Halloween cards for hospitalized children. The students enjoyed designing festive cards and writing words of encouragement for other kids who may not have the opportunity to spend Halloween with their friends and family.
This quote began to have meaning for me when I started volunteering at FLOC in September 2012. I was a recent college graduate, finishing up my very first internship in DC, and yearning for an opportunity to give back in this community.
The Outdoor Education Center is gearing up for Leaders In Action 2013-2014! Last year’s program was extremely successful, with many field trips, guest speakers, outdoor activities, and even an alternative spring break trip to Charleston, WV! The OEC hosts Leaders In Action (LIA) at two local middle schools, Charles Town Middle School and Harpers Ferry Middle School where we meet weekly from 3:00pm-5:00pm.
Jalen has been involved in the Neighborhood Tutoring Program for several years. He’s well known around the office and will often steal away from the Student Room on tutoring nights to chat with staff members about whatever is going on in his life.
In March FLOC learned that long-time supporter Kevin Conley’s son, Kevin (KC), was going to be hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, a trail that runs from the Mexican border to the Canadian border.
