Event Recap: Your Voice Matters! A Book Reading with Student Author Joseph Chuku

Event REcap: Your Voice Matters! A Book Reading with Student Author, Joseph Chuku

Everyone at FLOC was bursting with excitement as we welcomed student author, Joseph Chuku, of “Shayla’s Shutdown Solution” on Thursday, May 18. Joseph is a two-time published author with Shout Mouse Press, a Washington, DC publishing nonprofit dedicated to centering and amplifying the voices of marginalized youth (ages 12+) via writing workshops, book publication, and public speaking opportunities.

Joseph spent the evening with FLOC students, families, and staff reading his book. Following the reading, students had the opportunity to ask questions about the book, being an author, what it means to be published, and more. Through his work, Joseph showed students that their voices matter and their stories deserve to be told

Kamryn was one of our raffle winners at the event! She was so excited about her gift card and the opportunity to go home with new books.

In addition to the book reading and Q+A session, all attendees enjoyed food and beverages and were invited to join our raffle for a gift card. Students also left the event with new books to add to their home libraries.

We’re so grateful that Joseph Chuku joined us! This event was created in partnership with Shout Mouse Press with the intention of exposing our students to interesting career opportunities. At FLOC, we focus on more than just tutoring intervention. We also want to set our students up for success outside the classroom and inspire them to go after their dreams, no matter what path they choose.

We’d like to extend a thank you to the team at Shout Mouse Press for helping us put on this event. We’d also like to thank all the families that joined us.
