Celebrating Reading During National Reading Month

CELEBRATING READING DURING NATIONAL READING MONTH

This past March was an exciting time at FLOC as we celebrated National Reading Month! At FLOC, our staff and volunteers are passionate about reading and an important aspect of our work is that we instill a love of reading in our students through tutoring. We do this through various means such as providing access to a diverse collection of books, encouraging tutor/tutee reading time during sessions, ensuring our reading curriculum is engaging, and during National Reading Month, giving our students a month full of reading challenges to compete in.

Throughout the month of March, students were challenged to read for a total of 120 minutes, write postcards to characters they read about in books, and design characters using provided materials, among many other things. The smiles on our students’ faces and all the enthusiasm they brought into our weekly sessions serve as testaments to the success of National Reading Month this year. On April 1st, we hosted a National Reading Month Celebration. This was a culminating event that included activities, food from Chick-fil-a, free books, and the announcement of our March reading challenge winners, and more.

During the celebration, we were proud to award several prizes to students who completed the reading challenges and entered into a raffle. The Junior League of Washington generously gifted a Chromebook which was presented to NTP student, Kharity. Additionally, we gave other prizes to our deserving winners. Lana won an L.O.L. Fashionista Doll, Journee and Ziyah received an Amazon gift card, and Sebastian was awarded a Roblox gift card.

All of the students who participated in last month’s festivities did amazing! It was so great to see their creativity and excitement shine through in the challenges they completed. Our April 1st event was meant to not only celebrate National Reading Month, but also to celebrate our students and their efforts throughout the month of March. The festivities may be over, but the reading doesn’t stop! All year long, we are committed to fostering a love of books and encouraging our students to read everyday. Throughout the year, our tutors and staff will continue to come up with innovative ways to engage our students and ignite their passion for reading.

We’d like to extend a special thank you to our friends at The Junior League of Washington for partnering with us for our National Reading Month Celebration! And thanks to our students and volunteers who joined us.
