I have volunteered at\u00a0FLOC\u00a0as an after school tutor and have served on\u00a0FLOC’s board since mid-2016.\u00a0 Tutoring at FLOC has been an amazing and transformative experience for me. The most important thing I have learned about tutoring is that, if you can develop a connection of trust with your student and find out what they\u2019re interested in, you can tailor the tutoring sessions in a way that make learning interesting, relevant, and fun.<\/p>\n
My first student loved magic tricks – you would be amazed how you can incorporate magic into a math program.\u00a0 This last school year, my student and I slogged through reading Harry Potter until I found out he loved Paleontology and was really into dinosaurs.\u00a0 For the rest of the school year, we read about dinosaurs, did worksheets about dinosaurs, and played dinosaur-themed games.<\/p>\n
This school year, in our first session, I asked my student to write something – anything.\u00a0 She asked if it was ok to write it in a circle.\u00a0 I said sure.\u00a0 Here’s what she wrote:<\/p>\n
\u201cI am fast like a lion<\/i><\/p>\n
Sweet like a rose<\/i><\/p>\n
And happy like a cake<\/i><\/p>\n
Cool like ice cream<\/i><\/p>\n
And kind and gentle<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n
