{"id":5041,"date":"2015-12-02T06:16:57","date_gmt":"2015-12-02T06:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/floc.org\/?p=5041"},"modified":"2018-10-08T06:22:59","modified_gmt":"2018-10-08T06:22:59","slug":"sparking-success-in-2014-a-look-back-at-a-wonderful-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/sparking-success-in-2014-a-look-back-at-a-wonderful-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Sparking Success in 2014: A Look Back at a Wonderful Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>As we enter the last month of the year, let\u2019s\u00a0take a look back at all we\u2019ve achieved together in 2014. \u00a0Today, FLOC joins\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dc-aya.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DC Alliance of Youth Advocates<\/a>\u00a0in telling stories of our students\u2019 successes. \u00a0Some highlights of the year:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In our Neighborhood Tutoring Program, \u00a0<strong>77%<\/strong>\u00a0of students made at least\u00a0<strong>six months<\/strong>\u00a0improvement in reading or math and\u00a0<strong>62%<\/strong>\u00a0made at least\u00a0<strong>one year<\/strong>\u00a0of improvement in reading or math during the school year.<\/p>\n<p>Our Scholars Program once again celebrated<strong>\u00a0100% on-time graduation<\/strong>\u00a0of our 18 high school seniors in the class of 2014.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5042\" src=\"https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/hh-24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/hh-24.jpg 388w, https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/hh-24-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 388px) 100vw, 388px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>High school seniors submitted 100 applications to public and<br \/>\nprivate postsecondary institutions, and 100% were accepted into a postsecondary institution.<\/p>\n<p>One senior received the Posse Foundation\u2019s full tuition scholarship to The University of Rochester.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5044\" src=\"https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/gamiloubeli.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><br \/>\nOver 500 volunteers contributed their time regularly to our programs at some point in 2014, including spring semester, summer program, and the beginning of this current school year.<\/p>\n<p>And we chronicled all our exciting moments on this very blog. Some story highlights:<\/p>\n<p>In January, we introduced you to a new community- and capacity-building effort some of our most dedicated volunteers were spearheading.<\/p>\n<p>In February, you heard the news as brought to you by a talented and<br \/>\nconfident student in our reading tutoring program.<\/p>\n<p>In March, our Middle School Scholars investigated and reported on careers that interested them.<\/p>\n<p>In April, we took you on a tour of our NTP school site at Tubman Elementary.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/st-joes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5045\" \/><br \/>\nIn May, we filled you in on all the exciting details of our 11th grade Spring Break College Tour to six schools and five states in five days.<\/p>\n<p>In June, we were in celebration mode as we gave out awards at the annual Recognition Event and Empower Awards and also honored our graduates at the annual Fred Taylor Scholarship Dinner.<\/p>\n<p>In July, we were hard at work (and play!) in our summer tutoring program.<\/p>\n<p>In August, we introduced you to one of our outstanding High School Scholars and told you all about the summer writing workshops that he and his peers participated in.<\/p>\n<p>In September, we took a look back at the many Scholars in the Workplace visits our students embarked upon this spring and summer.<\/p>\n<p>In October, our Scholars kicked off a new school year by heading to MS OEC trip 1West Virginia for a visit to the FLOC Outdoor Education Center.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ms-oec-trip-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5046\" \/><br \/>\nIn November, we told you about a new model for getting our 11th graders ready for the SAT.<\/p>\n<p>Which brings us to December\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Before the year is out, we\u2019ll get in another two weeks of math and reading tutoring and college access and success programming.  We\u2019ll celebrate our annual College Night event at GW and mark the end of the semester with festive holiday parties.
