The idea for the campaign came from Chastity Lord, the current CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.achievementfirst.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Achievement First Public Charter Schools<\/a>\u00a0in New York City. She wanted to have a day for \u201ccommunities across our country where college graduation is not an expectation are surrounded by thousands of visible and vocal #proofpoint first generation students and allies \u2013 creating a new narrative about what is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forloveofchildren.wordpress.com\/page\/19\/floc.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FLOC<\/a>\u00a0is proud to support this endeavor as an ally to our own first generation college students in the Postsecondary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/our-programs\/floc-scholars-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scholars Program<\/a>\u00a0and our future first generation college students in our Middle School and High School Scholars Programs. It means making my mother proud; setting an example for my younger sister; and being a role model to other Latinos and undeserved minority that achieving a higher education is possible.\u00a0It\u2019s an experience that has impacted my life in the best possible way, and it would have not been possible without the help of FLOC!<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cms.montgomerycollege.edu\/edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montgomery College<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being a first generation college student to me means ending the cycle of poverty that my family has been in.\u00a0 I am setting the example for the future generations to teach them that being successful is the best thing there is and that education is the key to success. \u00a0Going back to that poverty is not the answer and I will show them that. That\u2019s what being a first generation college student means to me.<\/p>\n<p>Erica \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forloveofchildren.wordpress.com\/page\/19\/www.pace.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pace University<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To be a first generation college student means that I can carry out the knowledge that I have gained from so many people.\u00a0 It\u2019s an honor to say that I made it to college and will graduate.\u00a0 It will give me opportunities that I could never imagine and for that I am grateful.<\/p>\n<p>Adam \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forloveofchildren.wordpress.com\/page\/19\/www.salisbury.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salisbury University<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a first generation college student I learned the importance of education. I see opportunities that I have in the future for me and help people as they help me throughout my struggle times. \u00a0By going to college I can succeed as an individual and become a better student.<\/p>\n<p>Alayna \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forloveofchildren.wordpress.com\/page\/19\/www.psu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Penn State University<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It means to me, that there is more pressure. \u00a0Since you\u2019re the first you have to set an example for yourself and your family, to try to overcome adversity.<\/p>\n<p>David \u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/forloveofchildren.wordpress.com\/page\/19\/www.trinitydc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trinity Washington University<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being a first generation college student means a lot to me, because I am opening the door for my young siblings and showing that that if I can do it they can too.\u00a0 Also for them to see how an education can change someone\u2019s life.\u00a0 Being a first generation student allows me to make my family be proud of me for the great things I have achieved.\u00a0 It has allowed me to go out their help inspire other kids and show them the importance of an education.<\/p>\n<p>Jasmine\u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forloveofchildren.wordpress.com\/page\/19\/www.wau.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Adventist University<\/a><\/p>\n<p>People didn\u2019t think I was going to attend college, because I was so in love with dance.\u00a0 They thought I just grow up to be a dancer and nothing else.\u00a0 Being a 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0generation student, allows me to show people that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to.\u00a0 I am glad that I am a college student; that I am a 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0generation student.<\/p>\n<p>Nicholas \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forloveofchildren.wordpress.com\/page\/19\/www.sewanee.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sewanee: The University of the South<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For me, it means that my parents aren\u2019t able to help me in some aspects of my college life.\u00a0 But it\u2019s also a source of motivation from my parents as they want me to take advantage of opportunities they never had.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Kate Fleischer is the Development Assistant at FLOC).<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, on May 30, 2014 first generation students and allies are helping to raise awareness of what it\u2019s like being a first generation college student in the first ever\u00a0#ProofPointDay.
