Because you can be a part of new things and growing programs.\u00a0<\/strong>We\u2019d love for you to join us in any of our programs, but in particular we\u2019re excited to debut a new program this year at Savoy Elementary in Anacostia. Be a pioneer! Help us get this brand new late afternoon\/early evening\u00a0Wednesday reading program started on the right track!<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Because you want to build new skills and be a life-long learner.\u00a0<\/strong>Maybe you\u2019re a high school student\u00a0preparing for the SAT (did you know you only have to be 16 to tutor with FLOC?) or a college student preparing for the GRE, or perhaps you\u2019re studying to audition for\u00a0Jeopardy. What better way to keep your own skills sharp than by spending two hours every week working on the fundamentals with someone else? Maybe you\u2019re thinking about a career in teaching or counseling or the nonprofit sector and want to test the waters, or you\u2019re retiring and looking to stay engaged post-career. Maybe you just like learning new things. PERFECT. Because you want to get to know DC.<\/strong>\u00a0So many of our volunteers are from somewhere else. Volunteering is an excellent way to get to know your new city.\u00a0Of course, we\u00a0love our DC natives and long-time residents, too. Everybody can get to know the city better by visiting a new neighborhood (did you know we\u2019re in Adams Morgan, Anacostia, Barracks Row, Congress Heights, and Dupont Circle?) or meeting new people (on any given night, there will be between 10 and 60 other volunteers in the building with you!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Because volunteers live longer.<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/healthland.time.com\/2013\/08\/23\/helping-others-helps-you-to-live-longer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It\u2019s true.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Because others have laid the foundations, but you can help us reach higher.\u00a0<\/strong>Slowly but surely,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wtop.com\/dc\/2015\/07\/study-d-c-ranks-near-bottom-u-s-school-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the needle is moving on educational outcomes in our city<\/a>. Because education = empowerment, and it has the power to\u00a0transform not\u00a0just individuals but whole communities.\u00a0<\/strong>Maybe you\u2019re convinced you want to get involved in your community, but you\u2019re torn between direct service work and advocacy. Well, education combines the best of both of these worlds! FLOC is a super fun place to be, so you\u2019ll fit right in.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forloveofchildren.wordpress.com\/2015\/03\/20\/spring-into-reading-with-floc-recommended-reading-from-flocs-tuesday-evening-reading-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We read books.<\/a>\u00a0We play board games and Jenga and Connect 4. We kick soccer balls in the hallway.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/forloveofchildren\/photos\/pb.53801561805.-2207520000.1439937603.\/10152825084491806\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We play math hopscotch.<\/a>We excel at\u00a0something called trashketball that you\u2019ll have to come to program to understand. Because it\u2019s our birthday\u2026help us celebrate!\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forloveofchildren.wordpress.com\/2015\/03\/10\/celebrating-50-years-as-an-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FLOC was founded in 1965<\/a>, so this year we\u2019re\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vkKAhu21U9E&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celebrating the big 5-0<\/a>.\u00a0What we want most of all is for you\u00a0to get involved. Don\u2019t miss the party.<\/p>\n<p>10.\u00a0<strong>Because you made it.<\/strong>\u00a0We ask all prospective volunteers to tell us \u201cwhy I want to volunteer with FLOC.\u201d There are two kinds of answers that pop up over and over again. One goes something like this: \u201cI struggled in school\u2026\u201d or \u201cI was the first in my family to go to college\u2026 I would\u2019ve loved a program\u00a0like FLOC when I was a kid.\u201d Another is more like this: \u201cI had an amazing support system that got me through my education.\u201d And both of these kinds of answers come around to the same conclusion: \u201cAnd so I want to give back and invest in the next generation.\u201d One way or another, you\u2019re living a success story. Because you CAN.<\/strong>\u00a0No, really. We promise. You can totally do this. You don\u2019t have to have any experience to volunteer. We provide training before you start, a curriculum and\/or lesson plans to get you started, and regular check-ins with our awesome staff to help keep you and your students\u00a0headed\u00a0toward success and having the best time possible.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be nervous if you struggled in math yourself or if you don\u2019t remember the precise definition of an adverb. Our curriculum and training will get you all caught up. Plus, sometimes the person who struggled is the absolute best person to help somebody else.<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s something for every schedule! Saturdays, weekday evenings, weekday afternoons. Because we can\u2019t do this without you.\u00a0<\/strong>Our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/our-programs\/neighborhood-tutoring-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neighborhood Tutoring program<\/a>\u00a0is one-on-one, so every volunteer who commits is one more student we can enroll. In our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/our-programs\/floc-scholars-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scholars program<\/a>, volunteers allow us to provide more individualized support, deeper conversation, and a stronger learning environment.
