{"id":3836,"date":"2012-12-04T08:49:12","date_gmt":"2012-12-04T08:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/floc.org\/?p=3836"},"modified":"2018-10-05T08:53:57","modified_gmt":"2018-10-05T08:53:57","slug":"a-look-at-the-sixth-annual-floc-book-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/floc.org\/flocold2020\/a-look-at-the-sixth-annual-floc-book-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"A Look at the Sixth Annual FLOC Book Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was an afternoon that was aptly named, a real celebration of children\u2019s books.\u00a0 On Saturday, November 17<sup>th<\/sup>, right after the weekly Saturday afternoon reading tutoring program, over 80 students, family members, volunteers, and staff gathered for the 6<sup>th<\/sup>annual FLOC Children\u2019s Book Festival.\u00a0 We were there to celebrate reading and literacy, to meet some special guests, and to pick out books to take home. Not a week goes by at FLOC that we\u2019re not talking about reading and literacy, but on this day in particular, the halls of our Columbia Road offices were absolutely buzzing with excitement about href=\"http:\/\/www.wjla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WJLA-TV<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc7dc.com\/talentbios\/getbio.cfm?id=116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cynn<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc7dc.com\/talentbios\/getbio.cfm?id=116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00e9 Simpson<\/a>, a local television anchor and literacy advocate.\u00a0 She talked with us about her own love of reading, the people who inspired her career in the news, and about her path to becoming an anchor.\u00a0 Cynn\u00e9 then introduced\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lauramurraybooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laura Murray<\/a>, northern Virginia resident and author of\u00a0<i>The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School<\/i>, a story that details a gingerbread man\u2019s quest to reconnect with the students who left him behind during recess.<\/p>\n<p>Laura read her book out loud to us, with lots of audience participation, then talked with our students about her family (including her two daughters and her dogs!) her journey to become an author (she was a teacher first!) how to write a story (always ask \u201cwhat would happen if\u2026\u201d) and how kids can be storytellers and authors, too (they can, really!).\u00a0 The conversation included cameo appearances by Albert Einstein, the Lincoln Memorial, alien dogs, and hats that looked like gingerbread men.\u00a0 Laura invited several specially selected students to participate in a quiz show about the book and the presentation, and our students were brilliant:\u00a0 the game ended in a tie, with both teams getting every single question right.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style type=\"text\/css\">\n\t\t\t#gallery-2 {\n\t\t\t\tmargin: Murray (right) with FLOC students.\n\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>To wrap up our time together, Cynn\u00e9 moderated a question and answer session between FLOC students and the two special guests.\u00a0 Students asked several insightful questions, including (for Cynn\u00e9) \u201cHow do you get the inside scoop?\u201d and (for Laura) \u201cHow do you know what you\u2019re going to write?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the presentation finished, we divided into groups for even more festive book activities.\u00a0 Parents talked with FLOC staff and each other to explore how literacy develops, how to encourage literacy in the home, and how to advocate for better resources in schools.\u00a0 They were provided with a list of resources related to child and adult literacy, a listing of local libraries, and information on how to sign themselves and their students up for library cards.\u00a0 Kids decorated their own gingerbread men with all kinds of colorful art supplies, then came up with personalities and stories to tell about these cookie people.\u00a0 Author Laura Murray stuck around to talk more with Book Festival guests and sign copies of\u00a0<i>The select books to keep for their own personal libraries (provided by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.booksforamerica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Books for America<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstbook.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First Book<\/a>, and many generous individual donors\u2014thanks to all!)
