In doing so, they learned about Afghan ways of life, cultures, religions and traditions. Their Afghan counterparts took them on video explorations of Kabul and shared their hopes and desires for the future.<\/p>\n<p>In exchange, FLOC Scholars shared much about themselves, their cultures and their thoughts and insights about the world. Throughout the cultural exchange, the Afghan students and FLOC Scholars identified many differences and commonalities that exist between the two groups, which sparked interesting and meaningful dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>I would like to share one particular exchange, as it demonstrates how students in very different circumstances can relate to each other.<\/p>\n<p>Students in Kabul sent FLOC Scholars a poem by Rumi, a Persian poet and philosopher from Afghanistan, who taught about love, kindness, tolerance, and peace. FLOC students compared the Rumi poem to a Black Eyed Peas song about love. After discussing how love can be universal, transcend boundaries and make communities stronger, they collectively wrote a poem about love, which they will send to the students in Kabul.<\/p>\n<p>Love is a dangerous thing.<br \/>\nWe become addicts from birth,<br \/>\nIt is the doses of warmth and happiness that life gives us<br \/>\nThat turns into love.<br \/>\nWhen we don\u2019t have it we\u2019re left cold and shivering and sad<br \/>\nSadly there is not rehabilitation for not love.<br \/>\nLove can connect the souls of all people<br \/>\nAnd turn blood shedding<br \/>\nInto hug sharing<br \/>\nLove between people is one thing you hate<br \/>\nBut learn to live with.<br \/>\nLove isn\u2019t just a feeling,<br \/>\nIt\u2019s more of an action<br \/>\nAnd how you show care and respect for one another.<br \/>\nIf you love and you could forgive,<br \/>\nAnd don\u2019t think of the misery.<br \/>\nWhen I cry and see your face<br \/>\nYou\u2019re like love who came to take the hate.<br \/>\nLove isn\u2019t just an emotion;<br \/>\nIt\u2019s an experience you grow and change from.<br \/>\nWe need love to mediate the hate<br \/>\nIn order to replicate a mindset that can elevate.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no such thing as love!<br \/>\nThere\u2019s no such thing as peace!<br \/>\nLooking for love somewhere<br \/>\nLove leads to sadness<br \/>\nPeace is like laying on a private island with deep rich blue water.<br \/>\nLove is a connection of people<br \/>\nLove is access to bliss and hate<br \/>\nLove is tough<br \/>\nLove is something that you feel, that takes you on a high!<\/p>\n<p>Love is a word easily spelled,<br \/>\nEasily written,<br \/>\nBut hard to express.<br \/>\nLove is like a bright sun ray<br \/>\nThat illuminates your pathway.<br \/>\nHears come together to form<br \/>\nOne heart, one world.<br \/>\nLove has no eyes.<br \/>\nOpen the eyes to the world<br \/>\nAnd see who loves you.<br \/>\nDifference doesn\u2019t matter if love is there.<br \/>\nLove doesn\u2019t have to be about where one is;<br \/>\nIt can be about where one is going.<br \/>\nLove doesn\u2019t have to be in one place,<br \/>\nIt can be everywhere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Kelley Thompson is a Program Specialist in FLOC\u2019s Scholars Program.)<\/p>\n<p>FLOC Scholars spent the month of February participating in a cultural exchange with students in Afghanistan.
