Foday is a rising 11th<\/sup>\u00a0grade student at\u00a0Bell Multicultural High School<\/a>\u00a0and has been involved with both the FLOC\u00a0Scholars\u00a0and\u00a0Neighborhood Tutoring Programs\u00a0since the 8th<\/sup>\u00a0grade.<\/p>\n

If you attended this year\u2019s annual\u00a0Recognition Event and Empower Awards<\/a>, you might remember learning of Foday\u2019s hard work navigating the reading curriculum and the impressive growth he has shown.\u00a0 Or maybe you joined us at the\u00a02014 Fred Taylor Scholarship Fund Dinner<\/a>\u00a0where you witnessed Foday\u2019s sister get emotional upon hearing her brother\u2019s surprise voiceover sharing how proud he was of her.\u00a0 I believe that in both these special moments and the everyday interactions, Foday shows us that his story is only just beginning\u2026<\/p>\n

For five weeks this summer, Foday participated in the high school Tell Your Story Writing Workshop Series, where he and his peers learned how to be their own best advocate through self-reflection, written expression, and storytelling. Foday is one of the quieter students in the bunch, but he showed up each and every week, ready to engage with the material and speakers and take full advantage of the opportunities to explore, write, and share his personal story.<\/p>\n

The very first week, Joseph Price from the nonprofit\u00a0organization,\u00a0SpeakeasyDC<\/a>,\u00a0came to FLOC to provide the students with an introduction to the art of storytelling.\u00a0 Joe paired himself with Foday for the peer interview activity to find out the story behind his reserved demeanor.\u00a0 Foday talked for 10 minutes \u2013 no interruptions \u2013 and when the activity ended, Joe said to me \u201cFoday has a great story. I hope he writes about it next week.\u201d \u00a0And when I checked in with Foday at the end of the night, he said he really enjoyed learning about \u201cthe different ways you could tell a story\u201d and he felt \u201cexcited about the upcoming weeks of the workshop series.\u201d<\/p>\n

As weeks two, three, and four passed, Foday continually exemplified active listening and opened up during peer interviews. And when it came time to write, he was in his element.\u00a0 His quiet confidence radiated as he wrote stories about his past, present, and future.\u00a0 And when week five finally rolled around, I couldn\u2019t wait to see how Foday decided to reveal his final writing piece.\u00a0 Turns out, Foday connected his stories to form one and chose to share his work on this very blog.<\/p>\n

I hope you will find Foday\u2019s story below as impressive and inspiring as I do.\u00a0 He\u2019s \u2018going places\u2019 and FLOC will be with him every step of the way.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy Story\u201d \u2013 as told by Foday<\/strong><\/p>\n

Growing up in a family of seven has been the best thing in my life.\u00a0 As a kid, my three sisters and I lived in a big house in Sierra Leone.\u00a0 Being the only boy in the family wasn\u2019t easy; I always did things by myself even though sometimes I needed help.\u00a0 My parents depended on me the most and I also had to work harder.\u00a0 But no matter what, I wanted to do things successfully.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

In the future, I have decided I want to work hard to help people in need. My family and my community motivate me to be successful. Seeing other families losing their loved ones due to incurable diseases or not being able to pay medical bills makes me very sad.\u00a0 If I can help my community and other people it would be a great benefit to others and I would feel fulfilled.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
