The Book Festival is an opportunity for FLOC students and their families to celebrate the importance of reading and literacy. DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin FLOC Champions in a happy hour celebration of the academic year so far during spring break week without program.  \n\nIt’s the Spring Break Happy Hour! Come enjoy free food\, prizes\, and FLOC’s favorite tutoring games with your fellow volunteers during Spring Break for your students! \n \nWhen and Where is the Happy Hour?\nThe event will take place on the second floor of Johnny Pistolas on 18th Street in Adams Morgan on Thursday\, April 20th and will go from 6pm-8pm. Door prizes will be given to the first few volunteers to arrive! \n\n\nWho are the FLOC Champions?\n\nChampions are a group of FLOC volunteers who are celebrating and harnessing FLOC volunteer energy to empower our students\, and to build a strong\, active group of FLOC volunteers who share a common goal of strengthening our community. SUMMARY:FLOC’s Beautification Day
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 17th\, FLOC is hosting its first ever Beautification Day! We want those in our community to take ownership over the space they will learn and grow in throughout the year. Beautification Day is an opportunity for FLOC families\, students\, volunteers\, and staff to come together\, meet one another\, and work on a few projects around the office to help personalize and spruce it up for the year ahead! \n \nThe event is from 4-6:30 p.m. and anyone in the FLOC community is welcome to join\, if they don’t mind getting their hands a little dirty! There will be a raffle for families\, some light snacks\, and a FLOC giveaway after the work is done! The projects include adding chalkboard paint areas to program space\, creating a dream wall for everyone to share their dreams for their or their student’s future\, and making photo collages. \n \n  \nIt should be a great afternoon filled with hard work and excitement as we begin a new program year. But we need your help! There are several items that we are in need of to help make Beautification Day a success! DESCRIPTION:For Love of Children (FLOC) would like to invite you to our annual Beyond the Classroom Fundraising Luncheon on Thursday\, May 1\, at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park. \nThis inspiring event brings FLOC friends\, new and old\, together to hear from FLOC students\, families\, volunteers\, and board members about the work we do to ensure that DC youth have a viable path to educational success and earning a postsecondary degree.  This year’s event is especially important to us\, as we share more about our strategic planning efforts and our vision for growth. \nIn the development of FLOC’s strategic plan\, we asked ourselves how FLOC could use its successful focus on enhancing learning to prepare students for postsecondary success\, to have an even larger and more meaningful impact. We pushed beyond a simple calculation of growing the number of students served or opening a new satellite operation.  We rekindled a connection to our organization’s roots in the civil rights movement\, and were energized by the activist spirit that lives in our organizational DNA. \nWe soberly named out loud the tragic inequity in our city\, where children with family resources can easily secure tutoring\, mentoring and college preparation services\, while children in less advantaged neighborhoods struggle without access to educational services beyond the classroom — programs and services like those provided by FLOC.  We affirmed our belief that every child matters\, and every child deserves access to programs that provide viable pathways to a postsecondary degree.  We embraced our role in empowering FLOC’s key stakeholders\, our students and their families\, to offer ideas and a path toward that change. \nAt our luncheon\, on May 1st\, we will share our vision for FLOC’s growth over the next several years\, as well as opportunities to invest in creating a new future for our community and the students and families we serve. We invite you to come\, share our message with others in our community\, and support a path towards change. SUMMARY:7th Annual Children’s Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:Save the date for the 7th Annual FLOC Book Festival taking place on Saturday\, November 16th from 4-6 p.m. at Pepco Edison Place Gallery. FLOC’s Book Festival is a time for children and their families to celebrate reading and books! This year’s featured author is Marc Tyler Nobleman\, writer of Bill the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman. There will also be reading activities for children and parents around the theme of superheroes. \nAt the conclusion of the event\, students and their families will be able to take home 15 free books to start or add to their personal libraries. According to a 2007 study by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)\, 4th graders who reported having 25 or more books at home had higher scores on reading tests than children who didn’t have that many. We hope you’ll join us for this unique event that we are sure will leave you inspired by our incredible students. We’d like to thank SIGAL Construction\, Sedgwick LLP\, The Meltzer Group\, and Raffa for collecting books for FLOC students to take home.
