Trust Falls, Chicken Nuggets, and Building Community: A Day at the OEC with Middle School Scholars
On October 13th 2014, FLOC’s Outdoor Education Center (OEC) welcomed 23 Middle School Scholars and four staff members to the scenic oasis in West Virginia. Students were greeted by four enthusiastic OEC staff members who led them through engaging low-ropes course activities and games.

Meet Samantha
Samantha, 8, is in the fourth grade at Brightwood Elementary. She’s beginning her third year with the Tuesday night reading and Thursday night math programs at FLOC.

FLOC’s Scholars in the Workplace program aims to provide our students with critical career exposure to help them identify possible areas of interest, meet successful professionals in a variety of career fields and give them the chance to experience different workplace environments.

On Friday, August 22, Beyoncé’s philanthropic initiative #BeyGOOD and the Brooklyn-based backpack company STATE Bags partnered with DC Alliance of Youth Advocates (DCAYA) to provide elementary school children from under-resourced communities a back-to-school pep rally.

Foday is a rising 11th grade student at Bell Multicultural High School and has been involved with both the FLOC Scholars and Neighborhood Tutoring Programs since the 8th grade.
Summertime and the Learnin’ is Easy
Summertime is here and all our favorite aspects of this humid season are in full bloom—salt water taffy, sunscreen, ice cream, and, of course, tutoring. Summer session for the Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP) began on Monday, June 23rd.
