Building Character and Awareness
FLOC’s Outdoor Education Center in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, facilitates healthy character development for youth and adults through adventure challenges, environmental education, and sustainability practices in a powerful outdoor classroom.
After participating in a year-round program, FLOC students are invited to participate in a 10-day residential summer session at the OEC. There, students learn about the environment and themselves, building skills and self-awareness through challenge programming, including ropes courses, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, and hiking at the 350-acre facility.
Another key focus is FLOC’s partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools. During the year, the OEC offers an after-school program at Harpers Ferry Middle School -- Leaders in Action -- that is focused on leadership development, environmental education, and civic engagement. The lessons are reinforced by hands-on activities, local field trips, and volunteer opportunities.
Beyond working with students, the OEC staff offers customized workshops and retreats for community groups, churches, schools, families, professional organizations, and businesses. There are overnight facilities, miles of trails, beautiful scenery, and activities for all skill levels.
