FLOC Scholars Program

Awakening Potential and Preparing for Life

The FLOC Scholars Program serves students in grades 6-12 and beyond, helping them gain the skills needed to graduate from high school, pursue higher education, and succeed in college and career.

Middle School and High School Programs

Students in the Middle School and High School program are offered a variety of services, including weekly workshops, homework help, and individual academic advising sessions.

Grade-Based Workshops

In grade-based workshops, students receive academic and career guidance tailored to their age level. These workshops cover a variety of topics and provide students with tools and techniques to aim successfully for college and vocational schools.

Theme-Based Workshops

In theme-based workshops, students have an opportunity to explore topics of social and cultural concern such as art, health, global cultures, or the environment.  These workshops often take advantage of FLOC’s connections with local universities, cultural institutions, businesses, and other organizations, and open young minds to the wider world around them.

Homework Help

FLOC staff are available on a regular schedule to support students as they complete their homework assignments.

Individual Advising

These sessions give students an opportunity to review academic successes and challenges with a dedicated advisor.

College Search, Application and Financial Aid Process

Middle and high school programs are designed to ensure that students graduate from high school academically and emotionally prepared to attend and complete a post-secondary education.   Throughout the program, scholars and their families are helped through the challenging college application and financial aid process.  As students ramp up this process in their Junior and Senior years, they are guided through the nuts and bolts of choosing, applying to and financing a higher education, through:

Visits to college and university campuses, attendance at college fairs, as well as focused online research and virtual tours of campuses;

SAT/ACT preparation;

College Essay Writing;

Financial Aid Workshops.

FLOC Scholars programs begin in September and operate until June.

Post-Secondary Scholars

Academic and career challenges do not end with high school, and neither do FLOC programs.  Students enrolled in the FLOC Post-Secondary Scholars Program continue to receive support and guidance as they navigate their college or vocational school experience.  FLOC supports post-secondary scholars with:

  • Individual Academic Advice
  • Professional Development Workshops
  • Facebook Updates and Scholar Connections
  • Twitter Reminders and Announcements
  • A FLOC Scholars Newsletter
  • College Night social gatherings
  • Exam Care Packages

The Fred Taylor Scholarship Fund

The Fred Taylor Scholarship Fund, a For Love of Children endowment, was created to support economically disadvantaged youth on the path to successful completion of a post-secondary education.

The fund was created to honor FLOC’s founding director, Fred Taylor, who recognized the transformative power of education to break the cycle of poverty.  Fred envisioned a community in which every young person is empowered to discover and nurture unique talents; graduate from high school; earn a post-secondary degree; and thrive as contributing members of their communities.

FLOC has awarded more than $300,000 in higher education scholarships since 2000.
